Things to Do in Golden Week

Hattasan Soneiji Temple, Fukuroi
Golden Week in Japan is a collection of 4 holidays in a week. It starts from April 29, then May 3 to 5. A lot of companies also cancel work from April 30 to May 2 completing a full week as a holiday. Hence, the term "GOLDEN WEEK."

Golden week is one of the three busiest times in Japan. The other two are during Obon and New Year's Celebration. Tourism is at its peak both locally and internationally. I tried booking a tour for Fuji Five Lakes 2 weeks ago but the agent said it's already full until May 6th. It's probably the same with other tour agencies. If not fully booked, prices are expected to be more expensive. Airports and train stations are anticipating a large influx of tourists. If you're a foreigner who's planning to come to Japan, this is not the best time to go.

If you're not up for travelling during this time, you can do these things instead.

Things You Can Do During the Golden Week:

1. Participate in Traditional or Flower Festivals

Many temples and shrines in Japan have small events during this week. If you're not up for a "religious" festival, you can always check nature festivals near your place. Golden Week coincides with spring so many flower festivals are happening all over Japan. Wisteria, pink moss and tulips are in full bloom by this time. Roses and hydrangeas are also starting to bloom in some areas.Visit the nearest flower park near you or simply go to the nearest park.

2. Explore your area

If you want to go sightseeing but don't like the crowds, explore your own area. Take your bicycle or car and ride around nearby places. You might be surprised of what you can find. Sometimes, we spend more time exploring other places than our own.

Last year, I spent a day cycling and I found one of the oldest elementary school building in Japan. I also learned there's a big Cainz Mall in Hamamatsu. (That's after 2 years living here.) I discovered an affordable massage place, only 2960 Yen for an hour! (That's half the price in most places.) I also discovered nice and quiet parks with lovely flowers all around.

3. Catch up!

The Golden Week is the perfect time to catch up with friends, with TV series, with cleaning and with sleep. It's a great time to just alternately laze around and do things you wouldn't normally have time to do. Spend a day watching movies with friends. The spring weather is also nice for barbecues and outdoor sports. Read that book you've been meaning to read or prepare your closet with spring clothes.

Whatever you plan to do, I hope you have a great time this Golden Week!
